Chapter One
In a parallel universe, known by some as an alternate reality and by others as one of an infinitude of possibilities, and by still others (those versed sufficiently in quantum mechanics and string theory) as an earlier draft of this novel, the opening consisted of a letter purportedly written by the main character [Katherine Ophelia “Kitten” McDougal] to her mother upon the occasion of her running away from home. Kitten, that is. Kitten’s the one who ran away from home.
It was witty enough, in many respects, and also served the purpose of providing much needed background information. Sort of a prologue or foreword, before The Event that would change Kitten’s life forever. It was also meant to be ironic, but subsequent research into the exact meaning of that word have now raised some doubts. The intended irony was that Kitten wrote this letter in the mistaken belief that she had undergone a defining event–not to be confused with The Event that was currently looming in her future–not knowing about The Event that was to befall her within a few hours . . . or chapters, if you will.
Then I made the mistake of perusing (in a leisurely manner) a How-To book for novelists.
Sorry.
I just wanted to tell you about my Kitten. Oh, and I guess my Cat, too.
(Don’t worry, you’ll figure it out eventually).
